What is a Credit Union?
Credit unions have been in Canada since 1900. That was the year Alphonse Desjardins founded the first caisse populaire in Levis, Quebec. Credit unions began as an alternative to the commercially centerd, largely inaccessible banking system. Credit unions are democratically run by their members, whereas banks exist to earn profits for their shareholders. In the year 2004 there are over 250 credit unions and caisses populaires in the province of Ontario, with more than 700 locations.
They manage assets of more than $14.3 billion for nearly two million members in the province.

A credit union's primary commitment is to the needs of its members, each being an equal shareholder with the right to have a say in the operation of the credit union. The membership elects a board of directors which represents the members in the affairs of the credit union and is responsible for its overall direction. Our board of directors and the full time management and staff monitor the needs of our members and the community. This has enabled us to evolve, with services and technology that move us closer to your home or office in continuing to provide you with the finest in convenient, competitive and cost-effective services.

The credit union is regulated by the authority of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, Credit Unions and Co-operatives Services Branch and is insured by the
DICO
Deposit Insurance Corporation of Ontario (DICO)
an agency of the Province established under the Credit Unions
and Caisses Populaires Act.

As of January 1, 2000
deposit insurance was raised from $60,000 to $100,000

per member account. The "account" includes all deposits
(other than US dollar deposits) held by a member at the credit union.
